Xinqiao Bridge
Xinqiao Bridge is located in Lugang Village, Gaoqiao Town, Haishu District, Ningbo City. It was first built in the 19th year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (1386) and rebuilt in the 47th year of the Wanli reign (1619). The bridge arch bears an inscription plaque that reads “Xinqiao” (New Bridge), with the upper inscription “First built in the Hongwu year of Bingyin” and the lower one “Rebuilt in the Wanli year of Jiwu.”
The bridge runs from north to south, spanning both banks of the Hou Tang River in western Yin. It has a total length of 30.60 meters, a deck width of 4.6 meters, and an arch span of 10.44 meters. Both the northern and southern ends of the bridge are shaped like the character “八” (eight), with the northern end being 5.70 meters wide and the southern end 6.77 meters wide. Each side has 32 steps. The bridge is flanked by carved lotus-leaf-patterned balustrades, which are quite damaged. Among them, four balustrade panels are plain, likely added later. Between the balustrades are double-layered lotus-shaped pillars, resting on cloud-patterned drum stones. On the northern side of the bridge arch, there is a towpath that is 1.46 meters wide, currently covered with cement.
Having been rebuilt nearly 400 years ago, the bridge features exquisite carvings, a classic and simple style, and precise dating, making it one of the valuable ancient bridges in the region. In May 2005, it was designated as a cultural heritage conservation site at the Yinzhou District level, and after the 2016 administrative division adjustment of Ningbo City, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Haishu District.
