Hujiadong Bridge

Hujiadong Bridge is located in Jiandai Natural Village, Minle Village, Gaoqiao Town, Haishu District, Ningbo City. According to the inscription on the bridge, it was built in the 24th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1898).

This is a single-arch stone bridge oriented from east to west, with its western end bordering Yuyao City. About 100 meters north of the bridge lies the Yaojiang Five-Arch Sluice, built by the then Yin County Water Conservancy Association. To the southwest of the southern side, water flows from Dayin, while to the southeast, the river leads directly to Macheqiao in Minle Village. The bridge is 26.9 meters long and 3.50 meters wide, with the arch about 6 meters above the water surface. There are 28 steps on the eastern approach and 27 on the western approach. The bridge railings feature relief lotus leaf-patterned panels, interspersed with inverted lotus-shaped balusters. Cloud-patterned drum stones are placed on both sides. In the past, the railing panels on the southern side were better preserved than those on the northern side, which have largely collapsed or been destroyed. The bridge deck is trapezoidal, narrower in the middle and wider at both ends. On the southeast-facing arch wall is embedded a bluestone stele about 60 cm high and 80 cm wide. Due to the distance from the water, the inscriptions are difficult to discern, but the characters “Guangxu Twenty-Fourth Year” can be faintly made out. Each side of the bridge arch is adorned with a protruding dragon-head ornament.

The bridge is grand and tall in structure, exquisitely built, and is one of the more valuable ancient bridges in our district. It was designated as a cultural relics protection site at the Yinzhou District level in May 2005, and was placed under the jurisdiction of Haishu District following the 2016 administrative division adjustment of Ningbo City.
