Sansheng Temple

Sansheng Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Sansheng Temple is located in Xiushui Natural Village, Xiushui Village, Gaoqiao Town, Haishu District, Ningbo City. According to inscriptions in the temple, it was built during the Qing Dynasty. The main structure faces south and features a traditional quadrangle courtyard layout, covering an area of 1,268.91 square meters, divided into three successive courtyards from front to back.

The first courtyard consists of a plaza and a gate tower. The plaza has a flagpole stone, with a new flagpole erected on it. The gate tower is five bays wide, with the central bay featuring a raised-beam structure and five-purlin beams, and a depth of five columns. The second courtyard includes a gate tower, a stage, side rooms, a courtyard, and a main hall. The stage is newly built. The side rooms are three bays wide and one bay deep. The courtyard is paved with block stones and step-edge stones laid in staggered flat rows, retaining its original appearance. The main hall is five bays wide, with the central bay featuring a five-purlin raised-beam structure, while the side and end bays are six columns and eight rafters deep, with a front corridor, single-step beam, and a coiled awning roof. The beams are carved with flowers and figures, though most have been damaged. The main structure inside the hall remains intact, with block stones, column bases, and pillars well preserved. The third courtyard comprises a main hall and a rear hall. The rear hall is five bays wide and was newly built in the 1960s.

Two stone steles from the Ming and Qing dynasties still exist in the temple. The “Record of the Reconstruction of the Prefectural Lord’s Ancestral Shrine,” erected in the autumn of 1587 (the year of Dinghai in the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty), stands 1.94 meters tall and 0.51 meters wide. The top of the stele is inscribed in seal script, and the body is in regular script. It was composed by Jiang Yinglin, a presented scholar, literary licentiate, member of the Ministry of Revenue, and former Hanlin Academy probationer. The top was inscribed by Lin Kecheng, a presented scholar, literary licentiate, and local imperial censor of the Jiangxi Circuit. The full text contains 26 lines, each with 39 characters, describing the ruins of Guangde Lake and the key contributions of those who helped build the lake. The Sansheng Temple stele was created in the 60th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1795). It stands 2.10 meters tall and 1.08 meters wide. During the “Ten Years of Catastrophe,” the stele’s surface was painted over with lime, making the inscriptions now blurry and difficult to discern.

The layout of Sansheng Temple is complete and it is relatively well preserved. In May 2005, it was designated as a cultural relics protection site at the Yinzhou District level. In 2016, following the administrative division adjustment of Ningbo City, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Haishu District.
