Linjiang Building in Wenling

The Linjiang Building is a cultural relic protection unit of Wenling City.

The Linjiang Building is located at No. 4–137 South, Jiangxia Village, Wenqiao Town, Wenling City, Zhejiang Province. According to villagers’ recollections and architectural judgment, it was built during the Qing Dynasty, faces west with an eastern orientation, and features a wood-and-stone structure. It is a three-bay, double-eave, flush-gable roof building. It measures 7.64 meters from east to west and 8.61 meters from north to south, covering an area of 65.78 square meters. The central and side bays feature a through-tenon structure, with a five-rafter beam system including a front porch and rear double-step using seven columns. The ground floor of the Linjiang Building is mostly raised, allowing ventilation from front to back, somewhat resembling a covered street bridge, and was historically used for storing goods. The second floor has row windows facing the river, and the central bay enshrines a statue of the Goddess Mazu.

According to local legend, the renowned poet Xie Lingyun of the Jin and Song dynasties once moored his boat at this building when he was appointed as Prefect of Yongjia. In his poem “Ascending the Linhai Mountains and Setting Out from the Frontier,” Xie Lingyun wrote: “When the sun sets, I rest; I moor my boat at the riverside tower.”

Jiangxia Village: Jiangxia Village is located in the western part of Wenqiao Town. It was formerly the site of the Jiangxia Township government office. County roads Zhugai Line and Wenjiang Line, as well as the Jiangxia Drainage Canal, run through the village. Within the village lies a natural settlement — Wenzhoudong — which is the namesake origin of Wenling Street (Wenqiao Old Street) and Wenling County. The provincial-level Jiangxia Forest Park, Jiangxia Drainage Tunnel, and Jiangxia Tidal Power Station are also widely known. Jiangxia Village consists of four natural villages: Wenzhoudong, Jiangxia Dian, Jiangxia Street, and Shuangjiaqiang, with 18 villager groups, a population of 1,565, 566 farming households, 53 Party members, and 50 villager representatives.
