Lianshu Bridge

Lianshu Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Wenling City.

Lianshu Bridge is located next to Protected Area No. 053 in Lianshu Village, Ze Guo Town, Wenling City, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province. Legend has it that there used to be a large tree connecting both banks of the river, allowing people to cross, and later a bridge was built here, hence the name. It was first built during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty (1796–1820), renovated in the third year of the Republic of China (1914), and later raised and refurbished. This five-arch stone beam bridge runs east-west across Lianshu Bridge River, with a total length of 51.6 meters, a width of 2.86 meters, and an area of 271.4 square meters. The piers feature a stone cantilever beam structure, constructed using imitation bluestone slabs, with the middle pier being higher and wider. The bridge is adorned with carved stone railings. The bridge deck is paved with bluestone slabs. Each side of the bridge is lined with stone balustrades. The bridge is an important representation of the region’s traditional architecture, notable for its local characteristics and historical significance. Lianshu Village: Lianshu Village is situated in the southeastern part of Ze Guo Town, with convenient transportation. It borders Xiadian Village to the east, Talong Village to the south, Shuangfeng Village to the west, and Sanwang Village to the north. The village covers an area of 1.5 square kilometers, with 931 mu of arable land, primarily used for growing rice and sugarcane. It got its name from the ancient Lianshu (literally “Connected Trees”) Bridge; as “lian” and “lian” (联) share similar pronunciation and meaning, it was later adapted phonetically to “Lianshu.” It was once the site of the former Lianshu Commune, boasting a long history as the political, economic, and cultural center of the commune.
