Dayangshan Scenic Area

Dayangshan Scenic Area is the largest in terms of land area among the peripheral scenic areas of Xiandu. It is located in Dayang Town, about 30 kilometers southeast of the county seat, covering approximately 22% of the county's mountainous terrain. The mountains here are majestic, with striking peaks rising abruptly.

Dayangshan offers breathtaking panoramic views—you can watch the sunrise over the eastern horizon in the morning and admire the afterglow of the sunset in the evening. There are also vast azalea fields and the shimmering waters of Dayang Reservoir. The area is surrounded by abundant wild plants, enjoys a cool and pleasant climate, with an average annual temperature of 21°C, making it a rare summer retreat and vacation destination.

The scenic area mainly consists of four sites: Dayangshan, Dayang Reservoir, Jiaokeng, and Caotou. Key attractions include the Azalea Flower Sea, Dayang Reservoir, Immortal’s Stacked Boxes, Buddha Picking Stars, and Guanyin of the West Sea.

The main peak, Dayangshan, is the highest among the surrounding mountains, with an elevation of 1,500.6 meters. It is the highest peak of the Kuocang Mountain Range and also the tallest peak along the southeastern coast of Zhejiang Province. The mountain is often shrouded in clouds, covered with lush flowers and trees, and enjoys a cool climate. Visitors can admire sea of clouds, flower seas, and sunrises; go camping or enjoy the summer retreat—it’s an ideal leisure and vacation spot.

Dayangshan is also a strategic military location. On its mountainside lies a vast grassland, 1,500 meters long and 150 meters wide. Surrounded by villages at the foot of the mountain, it is well-suited for military training activities. Between 1916–1920, General Luo Ruiqing once visited the site for inspection. In the 1970s, China’s special forces were stationed here.

The Caotou scenic spot is located about 7 kilometers west of Dayang Reservoir, at an elevation of 891 meters. It gets its name from the local terrain, which resembles a water trough—hence the stream is called Caoxi (Trough Stream), and the village is named Caotou (Trough Head). It is widely known for its peculiar rocks and caves, as well as being the historic battlefield where the late Ming and early Qing ethnic hero Zhang Rixin fought bravely. Centered around Zhaibei, it borders Caofeng Mountain to the east, overlooks the Upper and Lower Baiyan Mountains to the west, and sits above Xiakeng Reservoir to the south. From this high vantage point, one can admire layers of beautiful peaks veiled in mist, adding a touch of magic—it stands out as a highlight of the Dayang scenic area.

The three peaks—Zhaibei, Upper Baiyan Mountain, and Lower Baiyan Mountain—rise over two hundred meters high, with massive rocks capping their summits, piercing straight into the sky in a spectacular display. Between these giant rocks are numerous fissures, interconnected vertically and horizontally, forming a multitude of caves and crevices—a remarkable wonder of the world that captivates visitors and makes them linger on, reluctant to leave.

Take Zhaibei as an example: it is surrounded by steep cliffs, with only one narrow spot where one can climb up or down sideways. By navigating through the crevices, you eventually reach the top of Zhaibei, which opens up to a spacious flat area of about 400 square meters. Among its wonders is a soaring rock called Lingxiao Stone, similar to the Pan Tuo Stone on Mount Putuo. There is also a hole in the stone that contains water year-round. In the early morning, wisps of blue smoke are often seen rising from the hole, earning it the nickname Incense Burner Rock. On the slopes below the peak, there are other fascinating rock formations such as Turtle Rock, Sleeping Ox Peak, Crouching Tiger Rock, Lion Peak, and Dragon Palace Cave—each more stunning than the last.

The Jiaokeng scenic spot is located upstream of the Panxi River. The area features emerald-green peaks, lush forests, uniquely shaped rocks, and beautiful waters, offering an exceptionally picturesque landscape.

Dayang Town: Located in the southeastern part of Jinyun County. The town government is based in Qiancun Village, 39 kilometers southeast of the county seat. The town is named after the presence of “Dayangshan” within its territory. It borders Xianju County and Yongjia County to the east, Qingtian County to the southwest, Shijian Township to the west, and Dayuan Town, Huyuan Township, and Fangxi Township to the north. Covering an area of 150 square kilometers, it has 5,134 households and a population of 16,283 (including 313 non-agricultural households and 380 people), divided among 27 village committees.
