Gufu Rock

Gufu Rock, commonly known as Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law Rock, is located on Zimu Mountain in Shuinan at the entrance of the main scenic area of Xiandu. The Jiajing Edition of the Zhejiang General Gazetteer records: “Five li east of Little Penglai, there are two rocks one above the other, also called Zimu Mountain.” When people exit Jinyun Railway Station and look east, they can see the two rocks: the lower one, aged and stooped, is the mother-in-law; the higher one, standing tall and graceful, is the daughter-in-law. Perhaps due to nature’s oversight, she was not given a pretty face. For thousands of years, local legend has it that this daughter-in-law was cruel-hearted and often mistreated her elderly mother-in-law. Such injustice could not be tolerated by heaven, and a thunderbolt struck off her head. Below the rock is a mountain pond, the water of which remains red to this day. Yuan Dynasty's Zhao Gongchen wrote a poem: “Ancient visage and hoary head remain unchanged, / By heaven occasionally endowed with form; / Though unfeeling, the stubborn stone brings delight / To travelers who gaze upon Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law Rock.”

Ancient Jinyun Xiandu was part of the territory of Wuzhou. Legend also has it that Sun Quan’s mother, Lady Wu, once made a special pilgrimage to Jinyun Mountain to pray, ensuring the eternal well-being of the nearby mountain folk, hence the name “Yongkang.” The lower rock is believed to represent Lady Wu; the higher one is Guanyin Bodhisattva clad in gauzy robes. To the north of the water lies Uncle’s Sedan Rock on Lion-Leopard Mountain—isn’t that Lady Wu’s brother, Qiao Guolao?

Below Gufu Rock lies the entrance to Xiandu, where the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. Song Dynasty’s Wang Zhen wrote a poem: “Beneath the Xuanwu Cliff opens a cave-heaven, / Ascending the steps, one feels already transcendent. / Spring’s artistry paints the earth like a picture, / The sound of waterfalls reaches the mountain like a zither. / Birds drive blossoms, calling for wine, / Children dance on swings in the open fields. / Rejoicing in the fireworks of Xiandu, / I return with inspiration to pen a verse.”

Below Gufu Rock are secluded caves, each delicate and charming, able to seat seven or eight people.

Between the two Gufu Rocks, there is a small stone resembling a dog, crouching beside its master, commonly known as Heavenly Dog Rock.
