Huangdi Ancestral Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Huangdi Ancestral Temple is the soul of the Xiandu Scenic Area. It is the main site in southern China for worshipping and paying homage to Huangdi, the legendary Yellow Emperor and cultural ancestor of the Chinese nation, and one of the ancient centers of Taoist activity in China. Located to the right of the Dinghu Peak and at the foot of the Buxu Mountain, separated by the Lianjin Stream in between.

The building boasts the magnificent architectural style of the flourishing Tang Dynasty. The Huangdi Ancestral Temple recreates the spirit of Huangdi, the common ancestor of the Chinese nation, and retells the enchanting stories of ancient times, holding high artistic value and commemorative significance.

The reconstruction of the Huangdi Ancestral Temple has once again made the Xiandu Scenic Area an important destination for the descendants of the Chinese nation to trace their roots. A grand ceremony to worship Huangdi is held here every year.

Background: The predecessor of the Huangdi Ancestral Temple was known as the Jinyun Hall, built around the years 326–342 AD during the Xianhe to Xiankang reigns of Emperor Cheng of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In the seventh year of the Tianbao era (748 AD), after Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, Li Longji, decreed that Mount Jinyun be renamed Mount Xiandu, the site was renamed Huangdi Ancestral Temple in honor of the Yellow Emperor. The new name was inscribed by the famous seal script calligrapher and then-county magistrate of Jinyun, Li Yangbing.

In the second year of the Zhiping era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1056 AD), the imperial court ordered it to be renamed Yuxu Palace. In the second year of the Xuanhe era (1120 AD), it was destroyed in war, but was later restored in the first year of the Jingding era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1260 AD). By the third year of the Xianchun era (1267 AD), with funding allocated by Qian Shuoyou, the Transport Commissioner of Two Zhe Provinces, the temple reached its peak expansion, covering a total area of over 30 acres. It comprised 99 structures including halls, chambers, ancestral shrines, palaces, pavilions, corridors, kiosks, and gates. By the late Ming Dynasty, only one pavilion remained.

In 1994, according to the “Xiandu Scenic Area Master Plan” and with the approval of the Ministry of Construction, the Jinyun County Government decided to rebuild the Huangdi Ancestral Temple, restoring the layout of the “Northern Mausoleum and Southern Temple” of Huangdi, the ancestor of the Chinese nation.

Xiandu Subdistrict: The Xiandu Scenic Area Management Committee of Jinyun County (abbreviated as Xiandu Management Committee) and Xiandu Subdistrict Office share the same team under two names. The committee and the subdistrict office operate jointly, overseeing all responsibilities related to protection, planning, development, construction, and other economic and social affairs within the Xiandu Scenic Area. The subdistrict office administers seven administrative villages, covering a total area of 35.9 square kilometers. The area includes one police station, one primary school, one township health center, and has a total population of 9,862 residents, with an average rural per capita income of 9,388 yuan.
