Zhutan Mountain

Zhutan Mountain is located within the Xiandu Scenic Area. Major attractions include Xiandi Dyke, Huaiweng Pavilion, Nine Dragons Wall, and Transcendence Pavilion.

Xiandi Dyke: The entrance to the attraction features a long dyke situated between two bridges, known as Xiandi Dyke.

The willows on both sides of Xiandi Dyke sway gently, and the pebble-paved dyke is both romantic and charming. It has become the top choice for local couples to take wedding photos, and its fame is growing, attracting thousands of newlyweds from nearby counties and cities such as Lishui, Jinhua, and Wuyi.

In fact, the main reason Xiandi Dyke has become a popular wedding photography location is that it offers the best view of the Dinghu Peak. With Dinghu Peak and Lianxi Creek serving as the backdrop for wedding photos, they jointly witness the couple’s love. It symbolizes that lovers are intertwined like the reflection of Dinghu Peak in the water—each within the other.

On Xiandi Dyke stands the pavilion-style Wangfeng Pavilion with a four-cornered pyramidal roof, along with an adjacent waterside pavilion. These not only embellish the scenery but also serve as prime spots for photography. From here, the Dinghu Peak on the shore stands majestically upright, while its reflection in the water appears graceful and sways with the ripples. When the afterglow of the setting sun casts a golden hue, both the shore and the creek reflections of Dinghu Peak become even more enchanting, resembling celestial palaces.

This picturesque scenery is the essence of Xiandu and has attracted notable figures throughout history. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it has become a must-visit spot for leaders at the central, provincial, and local levels, as well as tourists, to take commemorative photos. It has also served as a filming location for dozens of movies and TV dramas, including Ashima, The Legendary Twins, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, and Emperor Wu of Han.

Huaiweng Pavilion: This is a semi-open pavilion artificially built inside a cave. The pavilion covers an area of 90 square meters, is about 6 meters high, and is made of wood, with two corners extending beyond the cave entrance. The cave is called Huaiweng Cave, and the mountain behind it is Huaiweng Rock. At the foot of the mountain lies the broad and deep Hǎoxī Creek, commonly referred to as Zhutan. Legend has it that Zhu Xi (courtesy name Huaiweng), a renowned Neo-Confucian scholar of the Song Dynasty, once rested here. Hence, the attractions here are all named after Zhu Xi’s surname and courtesy name. Huaiweng Rock rises tens of meters high, extends hundreds of meters from north to south, and features cliffs, clear pools, ancient caves, and serene charm. Ancient trees provide ample shade, making Huaiweng Rock another excellent spot in Xiandu for exploring secluded beauty. The mountain valley behind Huaiweng Rock is tranquil and home to many twin trees, making it an ideal place for couples to pledge their love.

Nine Dragons Wall: Along the water’s edge stands a peculiar rock wall known as the Nine Dragons Wall. It is a banded stratified joint geological formation. The entire joint belt is about 100 meters long, roughly parallel to the surface of Hǎoxī Creek, with the lowest point less than 1 meter above the water. The joints within the belt vary in height and depth, reaching up to 4 meters in height and 4 meters in depth. Because the joint belt is situated among steep cliffs, with distinct, undulating, and curved tuff rock layers that create bumps and hollows, resembling numerous coiled dragons lying in wait among the rocks, it is called the Nine Dragons Wall, also known as Dragon Cliff.

Transcendence Pavilion: By the creek stands a single-eave, four-cornered pyramidal-roofed pavilion called Transcendence Pavilion, symbolizing detachment from worldly concerns and a carefree state of mind. It is an ideal spot for watching the sunrise over Ma’anshan Mountain. The pavilion has a base 2 meters wide, is 5 meters tall, and is constructed of wood with red pillars and green tiles. From here, you can gaze eastward to watch the sunrise over Ma’anshan, look north to see the Tianshi Cave up close, and view the majestic presence of Dinghu Peak to the south. To truly appreciate the charm of Zhutan Mountain, one should sit down, take it slow, and immerse oneself in its natural tranquility, freshness, and simplicity.
