Lishui Dalongmen Scenic Area

Category: Tourist Attractions 👁 100 views
The Dalongmen Scenic Area in Jinyun County is located deep within the Kuocang Mountains, upstream of the Tangxi River basin, within the ancient town of Xiaotaoyuan, at the entrance of Jiucun Village, about three to four li from Tangshi San Village. Here, the mountains are high and thickly forested, the ravines are deep with clear waters, the rocks are peculiar and the cliffs varied, with steep precipices and numerous caves. Especially striking is a towering waterfall dozens of meters high that sends sprays of water sparkling year-round, making it one of the most spectacular sights in Xiaotaoyuan. The complex features a bamboo sea, forest sea, and mixed coniferous-broadleaf forest with over 200 plant species, as well as ancient thousand-year-old tree clusters. The area’s pristine ecology and weakly alkaline high-quality water nurture a large population of wild spotted fish and stream frogs. The local customs are simple and unsophisticated, the scenery is beautiful, and the air is fresh and pleasant. At the center lies two parallel grand canyons at the junction of Jinyun and Pan’an, stretching over 10 kilometers in total, with over 100 acres of water surface. Along the mountain streams in the valley, schools of fish and flocks of birds create a breathtaking view. Among its highlights are the “Four Wonders and Four Goods”: the Four Wonders being the Kuocang Waterfall, the bare rock area of Shimen Gorge, the limestone cave, and the Jiucun thousand-year-old tree cluster; the Four Goods being the good water, good fish, good streams, and good air. Jinyun County was established in the first year of the Wansuide Feng era of the Wu Zhou Dynasty (696 AD), named after the ancient Jinyun Mountain within its territory. Jinyun is also the title of Xuanyuan Huangdi, the legendary human ancestor of the Chinese nation. The Xiandu Dinghu Peak is the site where Huangdi refined elixirs and held a feast for the gods before ascending to heaven, and the Huangdi Ancestral Temple is an important site for worshiping Huangdi in southern China, echoing the Mausoleum of Huangdi in Shaanxi, forming a pattern of “northern mausoleum and southern temple” to honor ancestors. Ceremonies to worship Huangdi are held annually during the Qingming Festival and Chongyang Festival, comprising both folk and official rites. The ceremonies follow the specifications of the “Supreme Sacrifice” (the highest form of ancient ritual), combining tradition and modernity, ritual and music. The ancient town of Xiaotaoyuan stands majestically at the mouth of the Kuocang Mountains. Beyond the pass lies the Huzhen Small Plain, the largest and most populous plain in Jinyun. The mountain pass is layered with ridges and peaks, while inside the pass, willows line the banks and flowers bloom, with the sounds of chickens and dogs heard in the distance. The Xiaotaoyuan Ancient Town was built during the Shaoci reign of the Song Dynasty (1194 AD), where over ten zhang of mountain rock were excavated to construct two stone arch gates, inner and outer. The outer gate bears the inscription “Xiaotaoyuan” (Little Peach Blossom Land), and it was rebuilt in the Bingwu year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. The inner gate was added with the words “Deep in Peach Blossom Land,” said to have been inscribed by a wandering monk—who was none other than Emperor Qianlong traveling incognito through the south. Amazed by the place, he wrote the four characters and donated them along with funds to the locals to build another gate. Xiaotaoyuan Ancient Town is also known as “The Big Gate” or “Big Gate Cave.” Nearby are the Chaoran Pavilion and the Ruzuo Nunnery, both relics from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Dragon culture has a mystical origin and deep meaning within the Dalongmen Agritainment Complex. At the scenic area’s entrance, on a sunny slope of loess soil in Beihong Village, it is said to be the ancient breeding ground of dinosaurs. During the construction of the mountain road by the Kuocang Forest Farm, dinosaur fossils were excavated multiple times, hence the mountain is locally called Dragon Mountain.
