Former Site of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China in Jinyun County

The site of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China in Jinyun County is a Jinyun County cultural relics protection unit, a classic red tourism attraction, and a patriotic education base.

The site of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China Jinyun County Committee is located at the Zhao Family Ancestral Hall in Gaochao Village, Huzhen Town. This ancestral hall is a Qing Dynasty–era structure, facing south with a north orientation, covering an area of 1,024 square meters. It has a longitudinal rectangular layout and features a three-courtyard, three-section brick-and-wood structure. The main façade is flanked by five-tiered gables on both sides. The entrance hall has five bays, with the central and side bays featuring a lifted-beam style with four pillars and seven rafters, while the end bays are connected by viewing platforms that link to the wing rooms on both sides. The middle hall also has three bays and is flanked by gables, built with a lifted-beam style with four pillars and seven rafters. The entrance hall and the middle hall are the most exquisite parts of the building, featuring thick, sturdy beams and refined, delicate decorations. The bracket arms are carved with figures and animal designs that are vividly lifelike. The upper hall has seven bays and is built with four pillars and eight rafters, with relatively simple decorations. The First Congress of the Communist Party of China Jinyun County Committee was held next to the shrine in the upper hall.

In November 1927, the Jinyun County Communist Party organization held a party member meeting at Yan Yi Primary School, establishing the Jinyun County Special Branch of the Communist Party of China, which was directly under the leadership of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee. In September 1928, over 40 party members recommended by 24 party branches across the county gathered at Yan Yi Primary School to convene the First Congress of the Communist Party of China in Jinyun County. They elected the Jinyun County Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Jinyun County Committee of the Communist Youth League, using the primary school as the base for the county committee until 1929. Influenced by the party organization and the county committee, a number of communists and progressive individuals emerged among the school’s teaching staff. Relying on the school as their base, they carried out activities and launched armed struggles, which had a significant impact on the military operations of the Third Regiment of the Red Thirteenth Army in areas such as Huzhen and Yanling in Jinyun, as well as Baizhu and the Forty-Fourth Pit in Yongkang.

In 1994, the site of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China Jinyun County Committee was designated as part of the third batch of county-level cultural relics protection units. In 1995, it was named a Jinyun County Patriotic Education Base, and in 2014, it was recognized as a Lishui Municipal Patriotic Education Base.

Huzhen Town: Located in Jinyun County, Huzhen Town sits on the upper reaches of Haoxi River, a tributary of the Ou River, in the northernmost part of Lishui. It lies at the junction of Lishui, Jinhua, and Taizhou cities, and within the hinterlands of Jinyun, Yongkang, Pan’an, and Xianju counties and cities. It is one of the three major ancient towns in southern Zhejiang. The town is 25 kilometers from the county seat, covers a total area of 228 square kilometers, and has a population of 100,000 (including 20,000 migrants). It administers 130 administrative villages, 5 neighborhood committees, and 202 party branches.
