Nanjianyan Terraces

The Nanjianyan Terraces are a Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Heritage site.

Although not widely known, the Nanjianyan Terraces in Suichang still stand as a scenic gem of southern Zhejiang’s mountain city, thanks to their long-standing cultural heritage and the untouched simplicity rarely disturbed by tourists. Vast and spectacular terraces emerge across Suichang County’s typical mountainous and hilly terrain. Over the years, locals have adapted to the mountainous environment with scarce farmland by crafting terraces suitable for cultivation, gradually forming the impressive scale seen today.

In the mountainous regions of Suichang, terraces can be developed wherever water sources are available for growing rice, with the area’s densely forested mountains forming a natural barrier. The layered terraces present a perfect combination of lines and color blocks. Viewed from above, they transform into abstract landscape paintings, with their graceful curves resembling the “fingerprints” of the mountains.
