Hengdian China Culture Park

Hengdian China Culture Park is one of the main scenic areas in Hengdian China Culture City. With its unique concept and presentation, it integrates history, knowledge, artistry, aesthetics, entertainment, and participation, making it a one-of-a-kind theme park dedicated to Chinese culture both in China and abroad. The park is situated south of the Hengdian Film and Television Industry Experimental Zone and west of Gongye Avenue, covering an area of over 500 acres. Buses passing through the Hengdian Film and Television Industry Experimental Zone can all reach the park. The foundation stone was laid on February 18, 2003, and it was largely completed in 8 years. The main structure in the park — the Three Teachings Pagoda — had its rooftop components installed on the 100th anniversary, marking the final completion of the entire China Culture Park. Therefore, Hengdian China Culture Park is hailed as a century-long cultural masterpiece project. The park is divided into ten major scenic areas: the Gate Tower Scenic Area, Cultural Square Scenic Area, Historical Corridor Scenic Area, Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains Scenic Area, Three Teachings Pagoda Scenic Area, Fish Joy Garden Scenic Area, Pagoda Forest Scenic Area, Botanical Garden Scenic Area, Ethnic Street Scenic Area, and Yao Terrace Scenic Spot.

I. Gate Tower Scenic Area

The Gate Tower Plaza stretches 208 meters from east to west and 32 meters from north to south. It features ingenious design and profound meaning, with uniquely shaped architecture that is grand and majestic. Two massive bluestone carved murals, each 135 meters long, 6 meters high, and 0.2 meters thick, depict the production and daily life scenes of traditional rural families across the twelve months of the year. Such large-scale stone relief artworks portraying the pastoral joys of traditional farming society are unique in China.

The gate tower, formed by six huge stone-carved pillars, has an imposing presence that seems to connect heaven and earth. The 110-meter-long central section is a bronze-colored cast bronze sliding door partition, while the copper floral eaves drip edges and copper-tiled roof on top exude a solemn, ancient, elegant, and noble aura, giving visitors the sense of entering a mysterious, magnificent, and profoundly meaningful paradise of Chinese culture and art.

II. Cultural Square Scenic Area

The Cultural Square is a massive circular plaza composed of 56 concentric circles, capable of accommodating ten thousand spectators, symbolizing the unity and solidarity of China’s 56 ethnic groups. On the circular platform are displayed 30 simulated replicas of representative cultural relics from various periods in China’s 5,000-year history, all carved from pure copper or granite. A beautifully crafted structure that embodies both the charm of the Han and Tang dynasties and modern architectural art — the China Gate — is decorated with white marble and camphor wood, and is intricately carved with hundreds of bats, cranes, dragons, and more. The craftsmanship is exquisite, with gold and silver colors shining brilliantly together, creating a magnificent and luxurious effect.

At the southern end of the square stands an unprecedentedly large national monument in terms of size, craftsmanship complexity, and content representation. This monument is 80 meters long, 6 meters high, and 1 meter thick. It employs relief, flat carving, round carving, and openwork carving techniques, making it unique in the history of stone carving in China. The deepest carving reaches 80 centimeters, while the shallowest is 40 centimeters. With 126 figures depicted in different ethnic attire, appearances, and styles, each comes vividly to life. The entire scene is grand and spectacular, vividly showcasing the Chinese spirit and strong will of equality, unity, harmony, striving, and moving toward a bright future among the 56 ethnic groups. It also symbolizes that the splendid achievements of Chinese culture have been jointly created by the working people of all 56 ethnicities. On the eastern side of the square is a uniquely designed sightseeing vehicle shelter where visitors can take shuttle vehicles to tour various attractions.

III. Historical Corridor Scenic Area

At the entrance stands a uniquely shaped, massive stone memorial archway. Beneath its 85-ton stone crossbeam hang seven bronze bells of varying sizes, which produce seven different tones, symbolizing that the Chinese nation has been a land of rites and music since ancient times. The archway bears an inscription by Aisin-Gioro Yuyu, the nephew of the last emperor. To the left of the archway is a stone tablet carried by one of the nine sons of the dragon — Bi Xi (赑屃); the tablet consists of three massive stones and weighs over 80 tons. It is completely wordless, known as the Wordless Stele, symbolizing the long and splendid history of China, which awaits continuation by present and future generations. To the right of the archway are an enlarged stone sculpture of the national treasure, the Gilded Boshan Incense Burner, and a stone tablet engraved with meander patterns.

The 220-meter-long Historical Corridor winds and twists with carved beams and painted rafters. On both sides stand 366 granite stone tablets. The inner sides of the tablets are inscribed with graphic introductions to the 56 ethnic groups and textual descriptions of China’s 3,000 surnames, while the outer sides feature portraits of 732 of the most influential and accomplished Chinese heroes, scientists, and cultural figures from various dynasties and fields, along with accounts of their significant historical contributions. The pillars of the corridor are engraved with 82 pairs of famous historical couplets, written by modern celebrities and master calligraphers, creating a unique corridor landscape.

IV. Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains Scenic Area

To the north and west of the Historical Corridor are artificially constructed representations of China’s four famous Buddhist mountains: Mount Wutai, Mount Emei, Mount Putuo, and Mount Jiuhua. The cluster of these four sacred mountains has a circumference of over 1,000 meters, with the highest peak reaching 28 meters and a total mountain area of more than 23,000 square meters, making it the largest group of artificial rock mountains in China. The Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains are interconnected, forming a cohesive whole while distinctly showcasing the unique characteristics of Golden Wutai, Silver Emei, Bronze Putuo, and Iron Jiuhua. The scenery of lakes and mountains complement each other, resembling a heavenly paradise on earth.
