Fengmen Gate

Located to the east of the city and south of Xiangmen Gate, it was initially named Fengmen, derived from Fengyu Mountain. Due to the presence of (river dolphins) (possibly finless porpoises) in the nearby river, it was also called (fish name) Gate or (another fish name) Gate. Later, because the area had many ponds and was abundant in feng (water bamboo, or wild rice shoots), it was renamed Fengmen. The gate has been rebuilt multiple times throughout the dynasties. In the early Qing Dynasty, the gate tower was reconstructed and inscribed with the plaque “Clear Stream Reflections,” and a water gate was added. The gate tower was demolished in the 25th year of the Republic of China (1936). The city gate itself was removed in the 1950s.
