Suzhou Museum

Suzhou Museum was founded on January 1, 1960, as a comprehensive regional museum and serves as the center for the collection, preservation, research, exhibition, and education of cultural relics in Suzhou. The museum's collection includes 21,266 artifacts/sets, among which 222 are first-grade, 829 are second-grade, and 8,564 are third-grade, with particular strengths in archaeologically excavated relics from various periods, paintings and calligraphy from the Ming and Qing dynasties, and craftworks. In addition, the museum also possesses 768 kinds of rare ancient books totaling 4,177 volumes, and 32,194 common editions totaling 103,283 volumes, making it a nationally designated key institution for the protection of ancient texts.

The site of Suzhou Museum, the former Zhongwang Mansion of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, is among the first group of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites. It is the most completely preserved set of historical buildings from the Taiping Rebellion period in China. In 1999, the Suzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government invited world-renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei to design the new Suzhou Museum building. On October 6, 2006, the new museum was completed and officially opened to the public. Covering an area of approximately 10,700 square meters with a floor space of over 19,000 square meters, and together with the newly renovated Zhongwang Mansion, the total construction area reaches 26,500 square meters. It forms a vibrant cultural corridor alongside nearby classical gardens such as the Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Lion Grove Garden.

Over the past half-century, Suzhou Museum has been repeatedly recognized as a provincial and municipal model of civilized institutions and a municipal exemplary service window. Its operational foundation is standardized and well-organized, with abundant achievements in academic research. Since opening to the public free of charge in 2008, the museum has taken it upon itself to promote outstanding culture and serve the public, striving to ensure that all its work “contributes to the inheritance of traditional and regional civilization, enhances the city’s image and cultural quality, and enriches the cultural life of citizens and meets the needs of local communities.” The museum has hosted over a hundred special exhibitions, welcomed more than 3.18 million domestic and international visitors in 2018, organized a total of 556 social education activities, and achieved an overall visitor satisfaction rate of 95.27%.

In 2008, Suzhou Museum became one of the first national first-class museums. In 2011, it was awarded the title of “Suzhou Tourism Standardization Demonstration Unit.” In 2012, it received the “Best Interpretation and Guided Tour” award from the National Cultural Heritage Administration. In the evaluation of national first-class museums, Suzhou Museum ranked 8th overall in 2012, placing first among prefecture-level museums. In 2013, it was honored as the “Most Innovative Museum in China,” and its special exhibition “Wen Zhengming of the Wu School: A Homage to Mount Heng” won the “Top Ten National Exhibition Excellence Award.” In 2014, the museum was named a “National Advanced Collective in the Cultural System.” In 2015, it was selected as one of the first “National Model Units for Museum Cultural Products.” In 2017, it was awarded the title of “Fifth National Civilized Unit,” and its exhibition “Sketches of the Italian Renaissance from the British Museum Collection” received the “International and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Cooperation Award” under the 14th (2016) National Top Ten Museum Exhibition Excellence Promotion. In 2018, Suzhou Museum was the only prefecture-level museum to be rated “excellent” in the 2014–2016 national first-class museum operational assessment. The Suzhou Museum Volunteer Society received the highest collective honor in the field of museum volunteer services — the “Hand in Hand with History – China’s Top Ten Museum Volunteer Stars” for Best Volunteer Service Team. The museum also won the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for 2018. In 2019, it was listed in the “Top Ten Most Innovative Official WeChat Accounts in Cultural Heritage for 2019,” was recognized at the China Night Economy Forum as one of the “Top Ten Cultural Venues Loved by Tourists,” and the Suzhou Museum Volunteer Society was awarded the title of “Best Volunteer Service Organization” in the national Learn from Lei Feng Volunteer Service “Four 100” Advanced Models selection.
