Suzhou Yuantong Art Museum (Yuantong Temple) is a cultural heritage site protected by the Suzhou Municipal Government.

The Yuantong Art Museum is situated just east of the wall of the Master-of-Nets Garden. Historical records indicate that Yuantong Temple was built during the Chunxi era (1174–1189) of the Southern Song Dynasty, rebuilt in the 29th year of the Guangxu reign (1903) during the Qing Dynasty, and between 1932 and 1936 during the Republic of China, it was home to figures such as Zhang Shanzi, Zhang Daqian, and Ye Gongchuo, who practiced Buddhism and Zen there. In 2007, social forces funded the restoration of Yuantong Temple, and on its original site, the Suzhou Yuantong Art Museum, the Suzhou Prehistoric Jade Research Association, and a museum were established.

The museum’s collection includes ceramics, ancient jades, oil paintings, and more.

The museum primarily focuses on showcasing prehistoric Chinese civilization (introducing the Hongshan Culture from the northeast dating back 6,500 years, the Qijia Culture from the northwest around 4,000 years ago, and the Liangzhu Culture from the Taihu Lake region approximately 5,000 years old). With an orientation toward publicity, exchange, research, and appraisal, it offers authentic, tangible artifacts from prehistoric times—ancient jade objects. Ancient jade represents the highest cultural expression of prehistoric civilization, reflecting ancient rituals, beliefs, and even aesthetic values. It can be described as a miniature history of Chinese civilization.

In addition to hosting a studio by the overseas Chinese oil painter “Taihu Resident” Zhu Shenguang, the museum also houses precious artworks by renowned modern Chinese oil painters such as Liu Haisu, Wu Zuoren, and Chang Shuhong, along with fine pieces of porcelain from various dynasties. It showcases the deep cultural foundation of its collections and the enduring charm of Suzhou’s rich humanistic heritage to friends from both China and abroad.
