Suzhou Yipu Garden, situated in Wenyalan Lane between Jinmen and Chamen, boasts an open garden view, a simple style, and largely maintains the original layout from its founding period. It possesses significant historical and artistic value.

The entire garden covers only five mu, centered around a pond that takes up about one-fifth of the area. The water surface is concentrated, with small bays extending from its southeast and southwest corners. Different-styled stone slab bridges are built over the water inlets, making the water appear open and flowing, without any sense of congestion. To the north of the pond are mainly architectural structures. Boya Hall serves as the principal hall in the garden. At its southern end is a small courtyard with a lake rock flower stand. On the south side of the courtyard, facing the pond, stands a five-bay waterside pavilion, while the wing rooms on both sides connect with those on the east and west sides of the pond. To the south of the pond lies an artificial hill made mostly of earth, with sections near the water crafted from lake rocks to form steep cliffs and perilous paths — varied yet natural. When viewed from the north side of the pond, the rugged rocks and lush trees present a strikingly beautiful and forested scene, providing a major focal point for garden viewing.

This design technique that combines the pond, stone paths, and steep cliffs was commonly used by garden designers in Suzhou during the Ming and Qing dynasties, drawing inspiration from nature while striving to surpass it.

To the east of the pond stands the Ruyu Pavilion, a relic from the Ming dynasty, connected to other areas by small pathways. To the west of the pond is the Qinlu Courtyard, separated yet linked to other scenic zones by a round-arched gate. Upon entering the courtyard gate, you’ll find a small pond inside, seemingly connected to the larger pond — a unique feature among Suzhou gardens. Scattered throughout the courtyard are lake rocks and plants, making it the quietest spot in the garden.
