The Suzhou Silk Museum is a science education base.

The Suzhou Silk Museum is located at No. 661 Renmin Road, Suzhou. The building is dignified and elegant, novel and unique, covering an area of 9,460 square meters, organically blending ancient civilization with modern style. Its architectural theme is the “Silk Road”: highlighting the historical connection between the ancient Silk Road and the modern silk city, reflecting the open awareness of cultural exchange between the East and the West.

The overall color scheme of the Silk Museum is white, reflecting the natural hue of silk. In the plaza at the main gate, you can see an east-west passage symbolizing the “Silk Road,” intersecting with the fully enclosed modern white walls that run north-south through the main building. The walls curve naturally at the entrance, symbolizing the softness and elegance of silk. Atop the wall stands a row of stylized mulberry trees with a circular opening in the center, resembling a stretch of ancient city walls along the Silk Road. In front of the wall are three marble statues — a mulberry picker, a silk soaper, and a silk weaver. The top of the main building features a tower-like roof structure. The interior decoration of the museum is extremely fresh and elegant. The various sculptures displayed in different exhibition rooms are all created by renowned sculptors in China.

Exhibition Hall Introduction

Preface Hall: vividly showcases the glorious history of the ancient silk kingdom. The silk displays in the “Ancient Hall,” featuring precious silk artifacts, models, and images, present the origin of silk from the late Neolithic Age to the evolution of silk production during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is a condensed version of the ancient Chinese silk history.

“Mulberry & Silkworm House” and “Weaving Workshop”: The “Mulberry & Silkworm House” is recreated based on the authentic scenes of sericulture and mulberry planting in rural households in modern times, as well as reconstructed mulberry gardens. In the “Weaving Workshop,” you can observe various types of ancient looms and traditional handcrafting demonstrations, including the weaving processes of famous silk varieties such as ancient brocade, colored warp velvet, and green silk. It’s as if you’ve stepped back into the prosperous days of Suzhou’s silk industry during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, when “half the city to the northeast resounded with the sounds of looms.”

Central Hall:

Passing through a symbolic ancient Silk Road gateway — Jiayuguan — you enter the Central Hall. The model of Zheng He’s ship from his voyages to the Western Seas echoes the camel caravans in the Preface Hall, carrying the civilization of the ancient kingdom to the world.

Modern and Contemporary Hall: The hall showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Suzhou silk, variations in clothing styles, internationally awarded products, introductions to master artisans and notable figures in silk, as well as the development journey of Suzhou’s silk industry, its international status, and the extension of the Silk Road.

Reminder: A silk shop is built northeast of the main hall, situated along a traditional-style street. Visitors can exchange RMB for special antique-style coins and shop for various types of silk fabrics.
