Suzhou Guanqian Street

Guanqian Street is located in the urban area of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. It is a century-old commercial street that was established during the Qing Dynasty. The street is home to numerous long-established and renowned shops, enjoying fame both domestically and internationally.

As early as 1982, Guanqian Street was designated as a pedestrian street, making it the first commercial pedestrian zone in the country.

The street gets its name from being situated in front of Xuanmiao Temple. It has borne this name for over 150 years.

The area boasts prosperous commerce and a concentration of famous shops, many of which have a history of over a hundred years. There are numerous historic sites, including the nationally key cultural relics protection unit — Xuanmiao Temple — which attracts domestic and international tourists with its rich Taoist cultural heritage.

By the 1930s, commerce on Guanqian Street had flourished even more, extending its influence to Taigong Lane and Beiju. Today, there is a small park there. Surrounded by large connected buildings, the area features national goods department stores, teahouses, restaurants, theaters, cinemas, and major hotels, making it one of Suzhou’s well-known entertainment districts.
