Pingjiang Road Historic District

Pingjiang Road Historic District is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Pingjiang Road is a historic street in Suzhou, located in the northeast corner of the ancient city. It is a small road that runs along the Pingjiang River, from which it gets its name. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, Suzhou was also known as Pingjiang, hence the name of the road. The area around Pingjiang Road is the most typical and well-preserved historical and cultural district in Suzhou.

It still retains the distinctive dual-grid layout of roads and canals, embodying the essence of a Jiangnan water town with its small bridges, flowing waters, traditional houses, and serene, ancient alleys. The area boasts profound cultural heritage, abundant historical relics, and humanistic landscapes, as well as numerous historic buildings. Many ancient bridges, wells, trees, and memorial archways are scattered throughout.

Pingjiang Road is truly a delightful ancient thoroughfare. On the oldest surviving city map of Suzhou from the Song Dynasty, the "Pingjiang Map," this street is already depicted as the main artery of the eastern half of the city. For 800 years, Pingjiang Road has preserved its original layout, texture, and length with roads and canals running side by side. With its small bridges, flowing streams, whitewashed walls, and black-tiled roofs, the proportions between the buildings, street width, and canal are just right, exuding an airy and elegant style. The lanes on both sides of Pingjiang Road, especially those to the east, have also retained many water alleys, making it the most authentic water-town-style historic district in today’s Suzhou ancient city.

Pingjiang Road starts from South Ganjiang East Road in the south and extends northward, connecting with East Baita Road and Northeast Street. Its ancient name was “Shiquan Li” (Ten Springs Lane), first mentioned in the 1834 publication *Wumen Biao Yin*, which states: “Pingjiang Road was anciently called Shiquan Li, with ten ancient wells — one south of Huayang Bridge, one south of Xijia Bridge, and one north of Yuan Bridge.” This provides quite a detailed account.

Pingjiang Road is a riverside road with a total length of 1,606 meters, approximately three li (Chinese miles). To the north lies the Humble Administrator’s Garden, and to the south is the Master-of-Nets Garden. The road is flanked by numerous historic lanes, such as Lion Temple Lane, Chuanfang Lane, East Huajiao Lane, Caohuxu Lane, Daxinqiao Lane, Weidao Guanqian, Zhongzhangjiagang, Daru Lane, Xiaojia Lane, Niujia Lane, and Xuqiao Lane. The road is now paved with stone slabs, lined with tall, lush camphor trees that provide ample shade. Along the canal edge, there are rows of stone railings, interspersed with stone tables and benches. Here, stepping into any old house at random allows you to touch the deep cultural roots of the Wu region.

“First came the Pingjiang Prefecture, then the city of Suzhou.” Pingjiang was originally the name of Suzhou Prefecture. Historical records indicate that in the first month of the third year of the Zhenghe era (1113) during the Song Dynasty, Suzhou was elevated to Pingjiang Prefecture, marking the origin of the name “Pingjiang.” In the 12th year of the Zhiyuan era (1276) during the Yuan Dynasty, Suzhou served as the administrative center of Pingjiang Road. This continued until the 27th year of the Zhi Zheng era (1367), when Zhu Yuanzhang captured Pingjiang and re-established it as Suzhou Prefecture. For over 250 years, Suzhou City, as the governing center of the counties under Pingjiang Prefecture and Road, was also referred to as Pingjiang City, and the street name Pingjiang Road originates from this.
