The Suzhou Gardens Museum is located to the west of the Humble Administrator’s Garden. Originally situated within the residential area of the Humble Administrator’s Garden, it opened in 1992 as China’s first thematic museum dedicated to gardens. The new building was constructed in October 2005, covering a floor area of 3,390 square meters, with an additional level added to the original two-story structure. The entire new museum is divided into several sections: the Introductory Hall, the History of Gardens Hall, the Art of Gardens Hall, the Culture of Gardens Hall, and the Concluding Hall. Among these, the Art of Gardens Hall provides a detailed display of garden design techniques such as rock stacking, water management, floral arrangements, and architecture.

The new Suzhou Gardens Museum retains the classic features of Suzhou’s traditional houses—white walls and black tiles—which harmonize well with nearby classical gardens such as the Humble Administrator’s Garden and the Lion Grove Garden. Despite the limited interior space, to achieve the effect of “recreating a universe within inches,” the main part of the museum avoids fixed walls, allowing flexible partitioning to meet exhibition needs. Although the exhibits focus on classical gardens, the museum makes full use of modern technologies—including computers, electronic displays, and digital maps—to present the refinement and intricacy of these gardens in a way that resonates with contemporary visitors.

In addition, displays such as models of ancient garden-building scenes, a 150-year-old model of the Tiger Hill Pagoda, and restored models of lost garden ruins further establish the new museum as a veritable “textbook” for understanding Suzhou’s gardens.

Transportation: Within Suzhou city, take bus 40 East Line, 40 West Line, 313, or others, and get off at Beiyuan Xincun Station, then walk west to reach the museum. Alternatively, take bus 50 East Line, 50 West Line, 55, 112, 178, 202, 262, 309, 518, 529 Air-conditioned, 923, Night 2, Tourist 2, or Tourist 5 South Line, and get off at the Suzhou Museum stop.

By car: Exit from the Suzhou Guanduoli interchange on the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway or the Suzhou-Jiaxing-Hangzhou Expressway, then turn left onto the North Ring Expressway and drive approximately 200 meters along Qimen Road to reach the destination.
