Wang's Songfen Charitable Estate

Wang's Songfen Charitable Estate is a Suzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Wang's Songfen Charitable Estate is located at No. 254 Pingjiang Road and is also known as the Wang Family Ancestral Hall. "Wang's Songfen Charitable Estate" is a Controlled Conservation Building of Suzhou, designated as No. 104. Constructed in the 22nd year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1842), it features a memorial archway and gateway along the Pingjiang River, with a stone stairway pier by the river serving as the main water access point for the estate. For a long time, it was obscured and damaged by residential buildings built along the river. In the spring of 2004, during the protection and renovation of the Pingjiang Historic Block, when an illegally built residence was demolished, a decaying wooden memorial archway was discovered in the floor cavity of the house’s beams.

In the water towns of Suzhou, boats were once the primary mode of transportation. Wealthy families had water gates along the canals. Research has confirmed that this water gate and memorial archway originally had three bays and four pillars, with a higher central roof flanked by symmetrical side gate rooms and a dedicated pier outside. The conservation and restoration plan adheres to the relevant regulations and principles for ancient architecture and heritage sites, preserving all historical components authentically, achieving "restoration in the style of the original to retain its authenticity." New materials used are clearly distinguishable from old ones, ensuring the reversibility and legibility of the historical heritage.

The restoration plan did not opt for original-state preservation or reconstructive rebuilding. Instead, the southern gate room was preserved as-is, with the decayed wood on the wall left untouched, the stone pillars and foundation stones re-erected in their original form, and steel pillars added separately as load-bearing elements. Timber was used to restore the approximate shape and structure of the original gate archway. The northern gate area no longer has surrounding brick walls, and the gate is not fully enclosed. The top is covered with glass to protect against rain, allowing people to clearly see the internal and external structure of the entire archway, observe the original ancient relics, and also view the additions made today to help people understand the features of this ancient building. The new and old elements are distinctly different — the new reflects the old, and the old remains authentic.

What we see by the river now is the memorial archway and water gate, along with the stone stairway pier by the river. The area accessible to visitors is the former front courtyard of the charitable estate, located at Nos. 255–257 Pingjiang Road in Suzhou. It has now been converted into the "Shangxia Ruo" teahouse, which is elegantly furnished. "Shangxia Ruo" first appeared in oracle bone inscriptions from the Yinxu site, meaning harmony between heaven, earth, people, and nature, and alignment with all directions.
