Shaanxi Guild Hall on Shantang Street

The Shaanxi Guild Hall is located at No. 508 Shantang Street, at the entrance of Jinjia Lane. It is also known as the All-Shaanxi Guild Hall, Shaan-Gan Guild Hall, Yongqin Guild Hall, and Yongliang Public Mansion. According to the inscribed stone tablet “Record of the Construction of the New Shaanxi Guild Hall in Suzhou,” the guild hall was first built in the 20th year of the Qianlong reign and completed in the 26th year. Originally, it featured halls, pavilions, landscaped gardens, and waterscapes, but today only three side halls remain, along with four large bluestone drum-shaped column bases from the Ming Dynasty. The guild hall’s gate wall has evidently been recently restored, with exquisitely carved brickwork on the memorial archway gate. The eaves are adorned with carved brick brackets, elegant yet conveying a sense of solidity. The gate tower is decorated with large brick carvings of plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, and the central part of the gate tower bears the inscription “敦乡睦里” (Promote Harmony Among Villages and Neighbors).

The Wu County Annals record: “The All-Shaanxi Guild Hall was located west of Maojia Bridge on Shantang Street. In the 6th year of the Qianlong reign, Xi’an merchants Deng Tingshi and Liu Huiyang initiated its construction, and in the 32nd year, Yuan Lun, Sang Wanzheng, Wang Zhengchi, Li Zhenghe, and others oversaw its renovation.” The ground structures of the guild hall were demolished during the campaign to “Smash the Four Olds.” In 1958, the Jinchang Chemical Factory was built here, which was later replaced by the Second Rubber Factory. After the recent restoration, the former Shantang Central Primary School from the original Lingnan Guild Hall and the Dayi Primary School from the Yu Family Ancestral Hall were relocated into the guild hall.

In addition to the guild hall, this section of Shantang Street is lined with riverside residences—buildings with white walls and black tiles nestled along the water. Homes here typically have their front doors opening onto the street and back doors facing the river, with steps leading down to the water for daily life and transport. The section of the Shantang River here is relatively narrow, with densely packed houses on both banks facing each other across the water, forming a classic Suzhou “water lane” landscape of “parallel land and waterways, streets and canals side by side,” fully reflecting the city’s distinctive character as a “water town.”
