Wu Zuoren Art Museum

The Wu Zuoren Art Museum is located on the west side of Shuangta Park in Dinghui Temple Lane. It is a public art museum built by the Suzhou Municipal People's Government to honor the outstanding contributions made by the artist Mr. Wu Zuoren to China’s fine arts and Suzhou’s cultural endeavors. Covering an area of 1,430 square meters with a construction area of 780 square meters, the museum was designed under the direction of Dai Nianci, former Vice Minister of the National Construction Commission and a renowned architect. The building features a strong Jiangnan architectural style. It was completed in 1993 and officially opened to the public in 1997.

The museum currently houses 110 paintings and calligraphy works by Mr. Wu Zuoren, his wife Ms. Xiao Shufang, and other members of the Wu family. These include Wu’s famous oil paintings from the 1930s such as “Sewing,” “Youth,” and “White Melody”; representative oil paintings from the 1950s like “Crossing the Snowy Mountains” and “Sun Yat-sen Meets Li Dazhao”; as well as masterpieces created after the 1970s such as the traditional Chinese ink paintings “Herding Yaks” and “Panda Hugging a Rock.”

The Wu Zuoren Art Museum is open to the public free of charge year-round and regularly hosts various art exhibitions, providing high-quality public cultural services to residents. The museum currently employs five full-time creative professionals, all of whom hold the senior national art title. Their works have won awards at numerous major national and provincial art events and enjoy a high reputation within the art community.

A native of Maolin Town, Jing County. In his early years, he studied under Xu Beihong and attended institutions including Shanghai Art University, Nanjing Arts Institute, Nanjing Central University, Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Professor Simon, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium. He was honored as a “Summa Cum Laude” graduate. After returning to China, he taught at Nanjing Central University. Following the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he served as President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. His artworks have gained international acclaim. He also held positions such as Chairman of the China Artists Association, member of the Art Committee of the Ministry of Culture, Standing Committee member of the 7th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Standing Committee member of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League.
