Located at No. 2075 Renmin Road in Suzhou, 400 meters north of Beisi Pagoda within the Public Cultural Center, the Suzhou Celebrities Hall showcases 447 distinguished figures from ancient Gusu, serving as a vibrant testament to Suzhou’s reputation for “abundant natural beauty and exceptional talent.” The hall covers a construction area of 2,368 square meters, with an exhibition space of 1,500 square meters.

The exhibitions in the Celebrities Hall make full use of a blend of traditional and modern artistic techniques along with multimedia technologies to highlight the achievements and stories of Suzhou’s notable personalities. In the Overview Hall, a U-shaped LED screen dynamically displays portraits of over 400 Suzhou celebrities in a flipbook-style presentation, creating a powerful visual impact. The Qing Dynasty Hall features an oversized surround screen and holographic imaging technology to vividly present a section of the bustling Changmen area depicted in the famous scroll painting “Prosperous Suzhou.” Several historical figures from the Qing Dynasty are integrated into the scene. When visitors press the interactive buttons on the magical glass panel in front of them, the characters gradually step out of the painting and appear before the audience—this innovative use of modern technology bridges the temporal gap between past and present. In the Thematic Hall, three white marble archways are combined with multimedia interactions to create an immersive experience zone: as visitors pass through the archways, quiz questions related to the imperial examination culture appear one by one on the floor beneath their feet, offering a virtual “scholar’s journey” experience along the “Path to the Number One Scholar.” Overall, the exhibition design embodies the essence of Suzhou while boldly innovating, merging education, appreciation, engagement, entertainment, and knowledge into a single compelling experience.

The entire exhibition displays 447 notable figures from Suzhou’s history, including acclaimed scholars, top imperial examination graduates (Zhuangyuan), high-ranking officials, and members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. Among the historical figures are Taibo and Zhongyong, the ancestors of the Wu region; King Helü and King Fuchai of the Wu State during the Spring and Autumn Period; Sun Quan, the ruler of the Wu Kingdom in the Three Kingdoms era; Lu Tanwei and Zhang Sengyou, two of the “Four Great Masters of the Six Dynasties”; Gu Yewang of the Southern Dynasties, who compiled China’s earliest surviving dictionary of regular script characters; Zhang Xu, the “Sage of Cursive Script,” and Yang Huizhi, the “Sage of Sculpture,” both renowned Tang Dynasty artists; Fan Zhongyan, a celebrated statesman of the Northern Song Dynasty; Fan Chengda, a famous poet of the Southern Song Dynasty; and Huang Gongwang, one of the “Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty.” The Ming Dynasty is represented by Grand Secretary Wang Ao and the “Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty”—Shen Zhou, Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, and Qiu Ying—as well as Feng Menglong, a leading figure in popular literature, and Kuai Xiang, the patriarch of the Xiangshan craftsmen known as the “Kuai Luban.” The Qing Dynasty includes historian Gu Yanwu, Qian Qianyi, leader of the Yushan Poetry School, and Pan Shien and his grandson Pan Zuyin from Suzhou’s prestigious “Noble Pan” family. From the Republican Era, there are masters such as Zhang Taiyan, a leading scholar of Chinese classics; Li Genyuan, a veteran statesman who retired to Suzhou; Wu Mei, a modern master of traditional Chinese opera; Liu Yazi and Chen Qubing, founders of the Southern Society; and the “Three Elders of Suzhou Culture”—Cheng Xiaoqing, Fan Yanqiao, and Zhou Shoujuan.
