Republican-era buildings in Zhiren Li

The Republican-era buildings in Zhiren Li are a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.

Zhiren Li is located on Xiatai in the northwest corner of Suzhou’s ancient city, inside Changmen. It stretches from Cangqiao Bang in the east to Huxi Warehouse in the west, with a total length of 166 meters. Nestled within deep alleys, it is not easy to find. About 200 meters north of Cangqiao, you can spot a group of buildings with a style distinct from their surroundings — this is Zhiren Li. There are nineteen plaques marked “Zhiren Li,” and these Republican-era buildings, varying in style and size, are arranged in three rows. From south to north, the first row consists of single-story houses with Shikumen-style doors, the middle section comprises two-story buildings, and the northernmost buildings feature both upper floors and courtyards.

Zhiren Li is an early Republican-era residential compound with a total construction area of 3,007.19 square meters. It is said to have been built in May 1923 (the fourth month of the Guihai year) by a merchant surnamed Que. The compound faces south and has a total north-south length of 77 meters and an east-west length of 55 meters. At the southern end is a row of six groups of single-story houses, the second row from the south consists of six groups of two-story buildings, and the northernmost part includes two garden villas that blend Chinese and Western architectural styles. It is a fairly typical early Republican-era real estate development project.

In 2009, Zhiren Li was included in the “Important New Discoveries of the Third National Cultural Relics Survey in 2008,” compiled by the National Cultural Heritage Administration. In July of that year, it was designated as a sixth-batch Suzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the municipal government. In December 2011, the Republican-era buildings in Zhiren Li were listed as a seventh-batch Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the provincial government.
