Leyu Social Hall

Leyu Social Hall is a Suzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Leyu Social Hall is located on Gongxiang Lane in the city center. It was designated as a Suzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1991 and currently serves as a Christian place of worship, protected and managed by the church.

Leyu Social Hall covers an area of 1,443 square meters and consists of three buildings: a main church at the front, a smaller chapel and spaces for clergy meetings and rest at the back. The original main gate was removed when Gongxiang Lane was widened in 1934. The current main building, the church, faces Gongxiang Lane with its entrance on the west side and features a cream-yellow exterior wall. The main facade has three bays, with a central arched doorway and arched windows on either side. Above the door is a sign reading “Gongxiang Lane Christian Church.” The steeply pitched gray-tiled roof features a triangular gable with a red-painted cross in relief, beneath which is a large arched window. Inside, the structure has two full floors and parts of a third, housing large and small auditoriums, among other spaces. The layout is symmetrical, with matching four-story square towers rising on either side, topped with pyramidal red-tiled roofs about 20 meters high. Each floor of the front elevation has arched windows—two on the top floor, one on the others—while only the fourth and fifth floors have windows on the sides. The smaller chapel and clergy residence are both two-story buildings.
