Modern Residential Building on Waiwujing Lane

The Modern Residential Building on Waiwujing Lane is a Suzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Modern Residential Building on Waiwujing Lane is located at No. 6, Waiwujing Lane, Xiadang Street, inside Changmen, and was designated as a Suzhou Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit in 1991.

Originally a villa owned by the Xie family, this is a two-story Western-style building with a mixed brick-and-wood structure. It faces south with its main entrance oriented eastward and features a parking platform in front. The southern side is equipped with a porch leading to the living room, which has floor-to-ceiling windows along its entire length, an outdoor terrace 0.4 meters high, and stone steps leading up to it. The building’s façade is characterized by the clean, straight lines typical of modern architecture. The walls are decorated with pink ceramic tiles, the outer porch has a polished pebble floor, and the roof has a steep pitch covered with green glazed tiles. The interior is exquisitely furnished with a living room, study, bedrooms, bathrooms, and other spaces, offering complete building facilities. The layout of the upper floors is similar to that of the ground floor. In the center of the garden lawn to the south of the building stand four tall cedar trees, providing ample shade. The surrounding area is paved with pathways, landscaped with flowers and plants, and enclosed by decorative lattice walls, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere.

This building underwent renovation once in 1945. In the early 1950s, it was purchased by a maternal and child health care station and later came under the ownership of Changmen Hotel. It has been recently renovated without altering its structure, with only minor changes made to the interior decoration. The current condition of the building is good.
