The Canelot Garden

The Canelot Garden is a cultural relic protection unit of Suzhou City.

The Canelot Garden is a classical Chinese garden architecture located at No. 34 Zhuangjiaqiao Lane, Suzhou City. It was first built during the Qing Dynasty. The residence and garden cover an area of 2,390 square meters (some sources say 5.02 mu), of which the garden itself occupies 140 square meters (0.21 mu). The residence is divided into three sections. The entrance hall, sedan hall, main hall, rear building, and flower hall are all relatively well-preserved. A garden in the northern part of the residence had long been abandoned. The Canelot Garden is situated to the east of the flower hall in the eastern section, originally called the Eastern Garden. Wu Daifu named it "Canelot" (meaning "leftover grains") after drawing inspiration from a line by Li Yu of the Southern Tang Dynasty: “Red berries pecked by parrots, grains left behind” (some say it’s from Du Fu of the Tang Dynasty: “Fragrant rice pecked by parrots, grains remaining”).

It is currently inhabited by descendants of the Wu family. In 1980, it was listed as a restoration project and conservation target, and in 1998, it was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Suzhou City.
