To the north of Duseng Bridge outside Changmen Gate lies a small alley running east to west along Shangtang River, called Dusengqiaoxiatang. The former residence of Ye Tianshi, a renowned physician of the Qing Dynasty—Meishoutang—is located here.

After more than 300 years of vicissitudes, the once sprawling three-courtyard, seven-section compound now retains only three courtyards and five sections. Although the overall layout remains, it has been divided into several disconnected households. Only the tall and exquisitely carved brick gate tower of the third section in the central courtyard and the large nanmu pillars with peeling lacquer silently “tell” the story of its former glory.
