Protected area: north from the back wall of the building, south to the courtyard’s southern wall; west from the west wall of the gate passage, east to the eastern wall.

Controlled area: north from the residential building, south 20 meters outward from the main structure; west from the concrete road, east along the line of the urban river.

Pu Songling (1640–1715), a renowned literary figure and short story writer of the Qing Dynasty, styled himself Liuxian, also known as Jiachen, and used the sobriquet Liuquan Jushi; he was widely referred to as “Mr. Liaozhai.” A native of Zichuan (now Zichuan District, Zibo City, Shandong Province), he was of Mongolian ethnicity. Born into a scholarly family, Pu was intelligent from an early age and possessed extensive knowledge. At the age of 19, he ranked first in the county-wide examinations and earned the title of Xiucai (a successful candidate in the imperial examinations at the county level). However, in subsequent imperial examinations, he repeatedly failed to advance, and despite his widespread scholarly reputation, he never achieved official success. It was not until the age of 71 that he was appointed as a Gongsheng (tribute student) by default.
