The former residence of Chen Bulei is located at No. 6 Yihelu, Gulou District, Nanjing. Before the War of Resistance Against Japan, Chen Bulei’s family rented this residence at No. 6 Yihelu. It was built in 1936 by Xu Tinghu, Director of the Agricultural Department of the Ministry of Industry. Covering an area of 989.01 square meters, the property includes a three-story Western-style garden villa with nine rooms, a two-story Western-style small house with two rooms, as well as five brick-and-wood Western-style bungalows and one traditional Chinese-style bungalow.

Chen Bulei (1890–1948) was a native of Cixi, Zhejiang, China. His original name was Chen Xun’en, with the courtesy name Weilei and the art name Yanji. He graduated from Zhejiang Higher School in 1911. In the same year, he worked as a journalist for the Tian Duo Newspaper in Shanghai. In March 1912, he joined the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance). From 1912 to 1920, he taught at schools including Ningbo Middle School and Ningbo Normal School in Zhejiang. In 1920, he went to Shanghai to serve as the editor-in-chief of the Shang Bao newspaper. In 1927, he joined the Kuomintang (KMT). He held various positions including Secretary-General of the Zhejiang Provincial Government, member of the provincial government and head of the Education Department, Secretary-General of the KMT Central Party Department, and editor-in-chief of the Shishi Xinbao newspaper. He also served as Vice Minister of Education of the Nationalist Government, Deputy Minister of Propaganda of the KMT Central Committee, and other roles. After 1935, he successively served as Director of the Second Bureau of Chiang Kai-shek’s Secretariat, Deputy Secretary-General of the KMT Central Political Conference, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Military Council, and Deputy Secretary-General of the Supreme National Defense Council, drafting documents for Chiang Kai-shek for many years. On November 12, 1948, he committed suicide in Nanjing.

Chen Bulei was known as the “literary brain of the leader” and the “strategist of the Generalissimo” within the KMT, often referred to as the “No. 1 Pen of the KMT.” He was a highly notable and controversial figure in modern Chinese history. Chen Bulei was a cautious individual who had a deep understanding of the conduct expected of a courtier, always showing great respect toward Chiang Kai-shek and his colleagues without any arrogance. As Chiang Kai-shek’s “official” speechwriter, he was honest and self-disciplined, avoided forming factions or engaging in power struggles, and carried an air reminiscent of a “virtuous statesman,” earning him the title of “a perfect man” from Chiang Kai-shek.
