The former residence of John Rabe in Nanjing was home to John H.D. Rabe, chairman of the International Safety Zone in Nanjing. To commemorate the German who sheltered numerous Chinese refugees during the “—”, the restored residence will officially open to the public next August.

Located on the Gulou Campus of Nanjing University, the former residence of John Rabe in Nanjing is a compound consisting of a three-story building. It is reported that in September 2003, then German President Johannes Rau learned about Rabe’s deeds during his visit to Nanjing University and subsequently promoted and facilitated the restoration and renovation plans for the residence after returning to Germany.

From 1931 to 1938, Rabe (1882–1950) served as the manager of the Nanjing office of the German company Siemens. During the “—”, he and other international friends established the International Safety Zone in Nanjing, setting up 25 refugee shelters and providing aid to over 200,000 Chinese refugees. At the time, Rabe’s own residence served as one of the shelters, housing more than 600 refugees.

The former residence of Rabe has now been renovated and restored to its original appearance. Located at No. 1 Xiaofenqiao on the bustling Guangzhou Road, the site has been designated as a cultural relics protection unit for permanent preservation.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) announced the former residence of John Rabe in Nanjing as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
