upon it, beginning to sparkle brilliantly as the anniversary of the People’s Republic approaches. Yes, this is truly Wuxi’s first city square in the full sense, and a source of pride for the people of Wuxi.

Taihu Square has a planned area of 670,000 square meters, bordered by Qingyang Road to the east, Canal East Road to the west, Yonghe Road to the north, and the area around the library to the south. The entire square is divided into a southern and a northern section by Taihu Avenue, connected via

a sunken underground pedestrian landscape passage. This passage serves as the north-south axis of the entire square, with a circular plaza at its center, spanning 280 meters in diameter, forming the heart of the square.

At the northern end of the square are the Great Hall of the People and the Municipal People’s Congress building. In front of the building lies a ceremonial civic plaza that can accommodate over ten thousand people for grand events; in front of the library is the Cultural Plaza; the southeast corner features Qingyang Park; and the northwest corner includes ecological green space, the Industry and Commerce Building, and the Administrative Approval Center...

The granite paving on the square’s ground is smooth and clean, with many slabs weighing over 100 kilograms each, including more than 10 varieties such as “Tianshan Red,” “Black Gold Sand,” and “Fujian Grey Granite.” The central granite-paved area of the square

also features many novel bronze reliefs inlaid into the ground, depicting patterns such as

waves, fishing boats, and flowers.

The northern square is full of exciting sights, particularly its delightful greenery. There are Photinia, camphor trees, michelia, osmanthus... as well as the rare acacia. Clusters of green, bunches of red, and layers of yellow create a truly beautiful scene. Horticultural experts explain that during the design and construction process, they didn’t deliberately try to turn the square into a park, but rather focused on blending modern urban style with the green ambiance of the Jiangnan region. The ecological green space in the northern square is one example—of the 35,000 square meters of green space already in place, about 40% consists of large areas of ornamental lawns. Visitors can stroll through these areas, surrounded by pools, fountains, and wooden walkways.
