The China Wu Culture Museum · Hongshan Ruins Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a cultural tourism site.

The Hongshan Ruins Museum and China Wu Culture Museum are thematic museums established on the site of the Hongshan Tomb Cluster, a nationally key cultural relics protection unit, built on the original location of the large-scale Qiu Chengdun tomb. They primarily focus on the display and research of artifacts excavated from the Hongshan Ruins, the study and exhibition of Wu culture, and the in-situ protection and presentation of Qiu Chengdun.

The planning and construction of the museum adheres to the principles of “high-standard planning, high-level design, top-tier preservation, and efficient construction.” A number of renowned domestic experts and authoritative institutions were invited to carry out a series of design tasks. The architectural design of the museum was handled by Cui Kai Architectural Design Studio of the China Architecture Design & Research Group, the exhibition design was overseen by Professor Lu Jiansong, PhD supervisor from the Cultural Heritage Department at Fudan University, the surrounding landscape design was managed by the Landscape Institute of the China Architecture Design & Research Group, and the conservation design of the Qiu Chengdun site itself was undertaken by the Nanjing Museum.

Museum architectural design concept: Based on full respect for the original terrain and landform, simple forms such as mud walls, thatched roofs, and sloping surfaces are used to integrate the museum with its environment. The planar image of the ruins is highlighted, allowing historical information such as tomb structures and forms to be fully displayed, thereby emphasizing the in-situ preservation and exhibition. The overall design plan resembles a bow and arrow, symbolizing the history of the Wu-Yue rivalry, as well as the unique ambition and strength of the Wu region’s people. The design style is simple and grand, while also being highly approachable.

Museum functional layout: It is characterized by an “integrated two-museum structure,” “three main exhibition themes,” and “four auxiliary functions.” That is, one architectural complex houses both the “Hongshan Ruins Museum” and the “China Wu Culture Museum”; it highlights three main themes: “Exhibition of Artifacts Unearthed from the Hongshan Ruins,” “Wu Culture Theme Exhibition,” and “In-Situ Exhibition of Qiu Chengdun”; and includes four auxiliary areas: a temporary exhibition hall, public activity area, administration and storage, and equipment rooms. The total construction area of the museum is 9,139 square meters, including 1,655 square meters for the Wu Culture Exhibition Hall, 1,345 square meters for the Hongshan Ruins Artifacts Exhibition Hall, and 1,193 square meters for the Qiu Chengdun In-Situ Preservation Special Exhibition Hall.
