Xiaoyao Dun Kiln Site

Xiaoyao Dun Kiln Site is a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.

The site was first used during the Western Jin Dynasty and continued to operate through the Tang and Song dynasties. The kiln is built in the form of a dragon kiln, stretching approximately 50 meters from east to west, with a maximum width of nearly 20 meters and a height of about 10 meters. The Xiaoyao Dun Kiln belongs to the southern Yue ware celadon system of ancient China. The cultural deposits consist of three distinct periods. The lower layer contains relics from the Western Jin Dynasty, mainly producing celadon ware with firm, grayish-white clay bodies and pale blue or yellowish glazes. The main vessel types include cups, saucers, bowls, basins, plates, bowls, and jars for daily use; the middle layer consists of Tang Dynasty deposits, primarily featuring celadon ware such as bowls, basins, jars, and lamp stands; the upper layer is from the Song Dynasty and mostly comprises coarse pottery for daily use such as jars and vats.

On October 22, 2002, the Xiaoyao Dun Kiln Site was designated as part of the fifth batch of Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Heritage Protection Units.

Dingshu Town: Located in Yixing City, Jiangsu Province, Dingshu Town is situated within the Yangtze River Delta Economic Development Zone. It borders Taihu Lake to the east and lies at the foothills of the Tianmu Mountain range to the west, covering an area of 73 square kilometers with a population of 140,000. It is part of Yixing’s urban area. In 2000, Jiangsu Province positioned Yixing as “China’s renowned Pottery Capital, an important industrial tourism city in Jiangsu Province, and a comprehensive commercial and service hub in the border region of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui.”
