Zhenwu Temple Kiln Cluster

The Zhenwu Temple Kiln Cluster is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangsu Province.

The remaining kiln sites form a small east-west hill, over 350 meters long from east to west and approximately 80 meters wide from north to south. There are more than ten kiln mounds scattered across the area, surrounded by abundant accumulations of porcelain fragments about 1–2 meters thick, with some areas reaching thicknesses of 5–6 meters. Based on the collected samples, the main products were various types of flat-bottomed bowls, four-loop jars, ewers, basins, as well as a small number of grinding wheels and porcelain pillows. The bodies are bluish-gray or reddish-brown. The pottery was wheel-thrown, often showing turning marks left during trimming on the surface; spouts, handles, and loops were all attached using adhesive methods, with irregular finishing at the joints. Ewer handles were molded separately and then affixed—some feature striped patterns and the character “吉” (auspicious). Glazes are mainly tea green, soy sauce color, and blue-green. The glaze has good luster, adheres firmly to the body, and often contains fine crackles inside. Glazing usually does not extend to the base. The kiln sites of the Zhenwu Temple Kiln Cluster all feature dragon kiln structures. Judging by the characteristics of the fired items, these kilns were first established in the middle to late Tang Dynasty and continued production into the Northern Song Dynasty.
