Muli Cave, located in Jintang Mountain within the hilly region of southwestern Yixing, Jiangsu Province, is one of the largest karst caves in Yixing. Long-standing local legends say it was a “fairy cave” inhabited by immortals, and it is also believed that Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, once lived here, which is why it is also called “Muni Cave.”

Its appearance is that of a small cave that drips water year-round. The cave was actually discovered on February 27, 1983, when two curious village boys squeezed through a rock crevice and found a spectacular large karst cave about 100 meters inside. After exploration, it was jointly developed with funds raised by Gangxia Village in the autumn of the same year. After three years of work, it was opened to the public on May 1, 1986. Muli Cave is a typical limestone karst cave dominated by an underground river. Through long-term dripping, dissolution, and mineral deposition, it has formed a myriad of stunning stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, and flowstones. The entire cave covers an area of 8,200 square meters, including 1,750 square meters of water passages spanning 750 meters. With its magnificent scenery and majestic presence, Muli Cave is a newly bloomed jewel among Yixing’s many caves.
