Before Emperor Guangwu of Han, Liu Xiu, ascended the throne, he was pursued by bandits from Taihu Lake and passed through Shushan Mountain. At that time, the three Chen sisters of Shushan, seeing the urgency of the situation, cleverly hid Liu Xiu in a pile of overgrown grass, thus saving his life. To preserve their chastity, the three sisters drowned themselves at Jinji Beach at the eastern foot of Shushan Mountain. After Liu Xiu became emperor, he built a temple in gratitude for their life-saving act and bestowed upon it the title of “Temple of the Three Holy Ladies.” During the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong era, it was renamed “Xiansheng Chan Temple.” The temple was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution but has since been rebuilt on its original site.
