Yixing Ceramics Museum

The Yixing Ceramics Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The China Yixing Ceramics Museum is located on Dingshan North Road, Yixing City. It is the first specialized ceramics museum established in China. Originally the exhibition hall of Jiangsu Yixing Ceramics Company and the Yixing Ceramics Exhibition Hall, it has a history of nearly fifty years. The museum complex spans over 20,000 square meters, with an exhibition area of more than 3,000 square meters. It is currently one of China's larger ceramics museums in terms of scale and influence, enjoying high recognition both domestically and internationally.

The long history of pottery-making and the splendid ceramic culture of Yixing are fully reflected through the collections from various historical periods. Over the past 7,000 years, from the middle Neolithic period to the present, ceramics have been a source of pride for Yixing. Countless skilled artisans have created exquisite works of art. Pottery from the Han Dynasty, celadon from the Jin Dynasties, Jun pottery and Yixing purple clay from the Song and Ming Dynasties, as well as contemporary colored glaze pottery, art pottery, and fine pottery, all showcase the charm of Yixing and highlight its status as the "Pottery Capital." Since the founding of New China, it has always served as Yixing’s “window” for external promotion and its “business card” to the world.

The museum's collections systematically reflect the development and evolution of Yixing ceramics. Various types of ceramics with significant academic value are precious historical heritages. The over 8,000 pieces of ceramics on permanent display showcase the splendid contemporary Yixing ceramic culture and the exquisite craftsmanship of pottery-making. The museum is divided into sixteen exhibition halls, including Ancient Pottery, Masterpieces by Renowned Artists, Purple Clay, Fine Pottery, Colorful Art Pottery, Jun Pottery, Celadon, Industrial and Sanitary Pottery, World Ceramics, and Chinese Ceramics. In the Ancient Pottery Hall, ancient ceramic treasures unearthed within the city, such as stamped hard pottery from the Han Dynasty, celadon from the Jin Dynasties, purple clay from the Song Dynasty, and floral-relief pottery from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, are displayed by period, primarily through historical materials, showcasing the wisdom of ancient pottery makers. Among them, the Qing Dynasty purple clay artifact "Black-glazed Bottleneck with Hui Pattern," a national first-class cultural relic, is a rare treasure. The Masterpieces by Renowned Artists Hall houses rare works by artists, while the exhibition halls known as the “Five Golden Flowers”—Purple Clay, Jun Pottery, Celadon, Fine Pottery, and Art Pottery—immerse visitors in an ocean of ceramic art. The rustic purple clay, dignified Jun pottery, elegant celadon, vibrant fine pottery, and unique art pottery all display extraordinary charm, competing in beauty.

Over the years, the China Yixing Ceramics Museum has actively played roles in exhibition, dissemination, protection, and research. It has hosted numerous large-scale events both domestically and internationally and received countless distinguished domestic and foreign guests. As an important cultural hub of Yixing, it is currently a four-tier patriotic education base at the provincial (Jiangsu), municipal (Wuxi), city (Yixing), and town (Dingshu) levels. It is bound to play an even greater role in social development and historical progress.

Dingshu Town: Located in the Yangtze River Delta Economic Development Zone, Dingshu Town in Yixing City, Jiangsu Province, borders Taihu Lake to the east and the foothills of the Tianmu Mountains to the west. In 2000, Jiangsu Province designated Yixing as “China’s famous Pottery Capital, an important industrial tourism city in Jiangsu Province, and a comprehensive commercial service city in the border region of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui.”
