Yixing Purple Clay Museum

The Yixing Purple Clay Museum is located on Dingshan Street, Dingshu Town, Yixing City, with a construction area of 1,500 square meters and an exhibition area of 900 square meters. The museum houses over a hundred masterpieces from ancient and modern masters in Yixing, China, featuring thousands of exquisite classic works. Chinese purple clay is a unique art treasure in the world with a long history. In the Song Dynasty, people discovered a special type of clay that was different from ordinary pottery clay. Its grains were especially fine, the texture particularly firm, and the color purplish-red—far surpassing ordinary clay in quality. It was the finest among clays—this was purple clay, found only deep within a mountain range in Dingshu Town, Yixing. The emergence of purple clay teapots has significant ties to the tea-drinking culture of the Yixing region. In the early Ming Dynasty, with the admiration of literati and scholars in the Jiangnan region, the art of purple clay teapot making gradually emerged. These teapots, integrating poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving, became an important part of Chinese tea culture.

The Yixing Purple Clay Museum is divided into two floors. The ground floor is the Comprehensive Hall of Famous Teapots Through the Ages, displaying renowned purple clay teapots from anonymous works in the early Ming Dynasty all the way to those from the early Liberation period and even the Cultural Revolution era. The Modern Masters Boutique Gallery on the second floor showcases over 600 exquisite works by renowned contemporary or modern Chinese master artisans. Among them are purple clay teapots by the late Gu Jingzhou, a world-renowned master of arts and crafts, who was hailed both at home and abroad as the “master of his generation” and the “grandmaster of teapot artistry.” His teapot craftsmanship is regarded as comparable to that of Shi Dabin, the great master of teapot making in the Ming Dynasty. The purple clay teapots created by national arts and crafts masters such as Jiang Rong, He Daohong, Wang Yinxian, and Tan Yonghai are also national treasures, possessing extremely high collectible value.

In addition, the gallery also displays a variety of crafted artworks made from fired purple clay, such as lobsters, cicadas, and praying mantises. Each piece is remarkably lifelike and vividly realistic, making them truly exceptional works of art.

Ding Shu Town: Located in Yixing City, Jiangsu Province, Ding Shu Town lies within the Yangtze River Delta Economic Development Zone. It borders Taihu Lake to the east and is backed by the foothills of the Tianmu Mountains to the west. Covering an area of 73 square kilometers with a population of 140,000, it is part of Yixing’s urban area. In 2000, Jiangsu Province designated Yixing as “China’s renowned Pottery Capital, an important industrial tourism city in Jiangsu Province, and a comprehensive commercial service hub in the border region of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui provinces.”
