Fufeng Bridge

Fufeng Bridge is a cultural relics protection unit of Yixing City.

Fufeng Bridge is situated on Fufeng Old Street in Fangqiao Town, Yixing City. In January 1985, it was listed as a county-level cultural relics protection unit by the Yixing County People's Government. In June 2006, it was declared a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit by the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government.

Originally a modest stone bridge, Fufeng Bridge was initiated for construction during the Song Dynasty by a man surnamed Dou from Fufeng, Henan, hence its name. It was rebuilt in the sixth year of the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty (1626) with funding from Zhou Yanru, the top scholar (zhuangyuan) of that year. This single-arch stone bridge runs east-west (with an east-southeast orientation at 13°), and its main structure is built with bluestone, while the railings are constructed from granite. The bridge is 19.05 meters long, 3.55 meters wide at the center, and 4.30 meters wide at the abutments. The clear span of the arch is 5.50 meters, with a rise (sagitta) of 3.40 meters. The slope is 16°. Fufeng Bridge features a well-preserved structure and graceful design. The old streets on both sides of the bridge still retain architectural styles from the Ming and Qing dynasties, exuding the distinctive charm of a Jiangnan water town.

Fangqiao Subdistrict: Fangqiao Subdistrict was liberated on March 28 of the lunar calendar in 1949. It was officially established as the People's Government of Fangqiao Township by order of the Yixing County Military Control Committee. In October of the same year, the baojia system was abolished and replaced with the village-group system, with Party branches set up at the township level. From June 1949 to 1955, the area underwent several changes including the division into smaller townships, land reform, mutual aid groups, and the establishment of primary cooperatives. In February 1956, the first township merger took place, and it was renamed the People’s Committee of Fangqiao Township. In September 1958, with the implementation of the people's commune system, the structures of townships and villages were dissolved and replaced by communes and production brigades.
