The Former Residence of Sha Yankai

The former residence of Sha Yankai is a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level in Yixing.

The former residence of Sha Yankai is located at No. 45 Dayuanli, Zhoutie Town. In May 2009, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site by the Yixing Municipal People’s Government.

Sha Yankai (1875–1970), courtesy name Wuzeng, also known as Bogong, later changed his name to Ke (?), was a Hui ethnic person from Zhoutieqiao, Yixing. He was a modern Chinese jurist and social activist. His major works include specialized treatises on water conservancy such as "Three Rivers: Four Examinations" and "Investigation on the Ancient Course of the Southern River into Taihu Lake," historical and literary research writings such as "Supplementary Annotations to the Collected Works of Tao Yuanming," "Biography of Hong Liangji," and "Miscellaneous Recollections of Cao Kun’s Bribery Election." He also authored calligraphy and seal carving works such as ten essays titled "Discussions on Calligraphy by Old Man Chi" and "Annotations on Frost Bell Metal and Stone Inscriptions."

The former residence of Sha Yankai was built during the Republican era. The building faces due south and consists of a two-story, four-bay, two-courtyard structure. The west side includes a connecting lane, spanning four bays with a width of 13.40 meters. The first courtyard has a depth of seven bays, while the second courtyard is 13.40 meters wide and 7.20 meters deep with six bays. There is a well in front of the first courtyard. The building is now largely well-preserved.

It is close to Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou, and adjacent to the Xiyi Expressway to the west, providing direct access to Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou within just an hour and a half’s drive. The town covers a total area of 73.2 square kilometers, with a population of 58,800. It administers 14 village committees and 2 neighborhood committees, and is home to over 400 industrial enterprises.
