Zhongyang Bridge

Zhongyang Bridge is a cultural relics protection unit of Yixing City.

Zhongyang Bridge is located in Zhongyang Natural Village, Wangmao Village, Zhoutie Town, Yixing City. In November 1996, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit by the Yixing Municipal People's Government.

Constructed in the 10th year of the Republic of China (1921), Zhongyang Bridge is a three-span stone beam bridge oriented from north to south. It features 10 stone steps on the southern side and 11 on the northern side, all constructed with granite. The bridge is 22.84 meters long and 2.15 meters wide at the middle. The central span is 6.15 meters clear, and the secondary spans are 3.90 meters clear each. The central span is flanked by vertical stone pillars inscribed with couplets in relief regular script. The eastern couplet reads: “Southern hills veil the hot springs; stone locks guard the pool; to the east lies the green prefecture, a thoroughfare welcoming the exorcism.” The western one reads: “Central it stands amid flowing waters, firm through the ages; the sun rises in fortune, all streams pay homage.” At the southern end of the bridge stands a stele erected in the 10th year of the Republic of China, inscribed with the “Record of the Construction of Zhongyang Bridge.” It was composed and written by Xu Zhongjie, a local resident. The stele is 1.38 meters tall and 0.76 meters wide.

It is close to Suzhou, Wuxi, and Changzhou, and adjacent to the Suyi Expressway to the west, with direct access to Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou within just an hour and a half’s drive. The town covers a total area of 73.2 square kilometers, with a population of 58,800. It governs 14 village committees and 2 neighborhood committees, and is home to over 400 industrial enterprises.
