Nanyou Lantern Tower

Nanyou Lantern Tower, located at the northern end of Nanyou Village, Xinzhuang Town, Yixing City, was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site by the Yixing Municipal People's Government in March 2003.

Nanyou Lantern Tower, also known as "Lantern Tower Hermitage," was built in the 20th year of the Daoguang reign (1840) during the Qing Dynasty through donations raised by local residents Ou Huiting and Shi Xun. It was destroyed during the military conflicts of the Xianfeng era and later rebuilt in the Tongzhi era through donations from Xu Xiren, Ouyang Kui, and Pan Zurong. The Lantern Tower faces south and has a single-story, two-floor structure, measuring 4.30 meters in width and 9 meters in depth across seven bays. There is a single-story building on each side, east and west; the eastern one has been demolished, while the western one is severely damaged. To the north of the tower is a brick-carved gate, inscribed on the outside with “This Is the Crossing” and on the inside with “Truly Recommending the Virtuous.” The lantern room is situated on the exterior of the western gable wall, directly facing the eastern [...] and flanked by two oil lamps. Xinzhuang Subdistrict: Xinzhuang Subdistrict is located in the eastern part of Yixing City. It covers an area of 44 square kilometers with a population of 38,000. The subdistrict government is stationed on Zhenze Road, Xinzhuang, 11 kilometers east of the Yixing municipal government seat. It borders Taihu Lake to the east, Dingshu Town to the south, Yicheng Subdistrict to the west, and Zhoutie Town to the north. The subdistrict administers 11 villages—Jiaodu, Hexin, Hongxiang, Xinzhuang, Suyang, Dongzhai, Baima, Zhongma, Futu, and Xiashu—and two community committees: Zhenze and Nanyang.
