Gatehouse of Yixing Public Middle School

The gatehouse of Yixing Public Middle School is located within Jiangsu Yixing Middle School on Renmin South Road, Yicheng Subdistrict, Yixing City. In May 2009, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site by the Yixing Municipal People’s Government.

The gatehouse of Yixing Public Middle School was built in 1925 and funded by local gentry and officials such as Sha Yankai, Ren Fengdao, and Jia Shiyi. It is one of the few remaining typical examples of Republican-era architecture in Yixing. The building faces west (with a slight northward orientation of 20°) and is a two-story structure with three bays, measuring 11.37 meters in width and 8.10 meters in depth. The current ground level and interior design have been altered.

Yicheng Subdistrict: The Yicheng Subdistrict Office is the seat of the Yixing Municipal Government and serves as the city’s political, economic, and cultural center, as well as its window to the outside world. Covering an area of 40 square kilometers with a population of 240,000, it governs 30 community committees and 6 administrative villages. The jurisdiction of Yicheng Town is divided by the Wuxi-Shanghai Canal: the area inside the canal adjacent to the town is under the administration of Yicheng Subdistrict, while the area outside the canal falls under the Yixing Economic Development Zone. Within this zone, community committees, villages (groups), and enterprises originally belonging to Yicheng Town are managed by the Yixing Economic Development Zone.
