Donglei Stone Sea

Donglei is named after its rocks and features towering mountains. At the northern foothills, countless massive boulders are scattered in disarray, forming what is known as the Stone Sea. Formed hundreds of millions of years ago and shaped by wind, rain, and ocean currents, these rocks are naturally smooth and come in countless shapes, displaying unparalleled craftsmanship by nature. Adding to the scene, clusters of trees sprout from crevices in the rocks, wildflowers carpet the ground, and vines sprawl across the stones—creating the impression of a vast collection of oversized potted plants. As visitors stroll through the Stone Sea, the scenery shifts with every step, offering more than the eye can take in. Some rocks resemble fierce beasts, others whales, houses, tables, chairs, boats, swords, birds... The wonders of nature, coupled with the power of imagination, bring life to these otherwise cold stones.

The masterpiece of the Stone Sea is the Sanlei Stones—huge, rugged rocks standing tall by the path, wider at the top and narrowing downward. The top stone is horizontally split into three sections, stacked precariously on one another, as if they could be blown down by the mountain wind at any moment. Walking beneath them often leaves visitors feeling uneasy. Engraved on the Sanlei Stones are inscriptions such as “Upright and Openhearted” and “Returning to Donglei.”
