Dawuya Stone City

Dawuya Stone City is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Jiangsu Province.

Dawuya Stone City is located at the foot of Dawuya Cliff in Nanshan, Chaoyang Subdistrict, Lianyun District, Lianyungang City. The southern side of the city borders a cliff, while the western and northern sides are surrounded by deep gullies. Only the eastern side features a gentle slope passable by people, giving it a strategic position that is easily defensible — a true “one man can hold the pass against ten thousand.” The stone city was funded and built by the grandfather of Zhang Baichuan to guard against rebel forces. Today, only the stone walls remain, varying in height from 1.2 to 3 meters and in width from 0.9 to 1.1 meters, stretching approximately 1,000 meters from north to south. On a large rock within the southern part of the city, there is an inscription carved in stone — Zhang Baichuan’s “Record of the Stone City at Wuya Cliff,” which consists of 708 characters. The content provides indirect insight into how local officials and gentry built this city to resist the Nian Army uprising led by Liu Tianfu. It records that the city was constructed in August of the 11th year of the Xianfeng reign (1861) and completed in January of the 1st year of the Tongzhi reign (1862). This structure holds significant historical value for the study of the Nian Army's activities. It remains largely intact today and serves as a precious resource for researching the history of the Taiping Rebellion and anti-Qing resistance. In 1995, it was designated as part of the second batch of cultural heritage sites protected at the municipal level in Lianyungang. In 2010, it was listed in the fourth batch of municipal-level protected heritage sites in Lianyungang. In 2011, it was included in the seventh batch of provincially protected heritage sites in Jiangsu Province.

The protected area extends 50 meters in all directions from the main body of the stone city.

Construction Control Zone:

The construction control zone extends 150 meters in all directions from the main body of the stone city.

Chaoyang Subdistrict: Following the 2013 administrative division adjustment, Chaoyang Town was abolished and Chaoyang Subdistrict Office was established. After the adjustment, the administrative area covers 31.4 square kilometers with a total population of 20,000. It governs two neighborhood committees — Xin County and Chao Dong — and seven village committees — Xi Zhuang, Liu Xiang, Han Li, Zhang Zhuang, Yin Song, Ma Shan, and Sha Ji.

Chaoyang Town of Lianyungang Economic and Technological Development Zone is located at the northern foot of the national AAAA-level scenic spot Huaguo Mountain.
