Rock Mound Inscription

The Rock Mound Inscription is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The Rock Mound Inscription is located on the northwest side of Xizhuang Village, Chaoyang Subdistrict, Lianyungang District, Lianyungang City, and is also known as the Distance Marker Stone. It is carved on a natural cliff, commonly called "Dazhao Cliff" and also referred to as "Stone Platform." The inscription is 26 cm wide and 92 cm high, featuring six characters “岩石堠三十里” (Rock Mound Thirty Li), each character about 10 cm in size, written in regular script. On the southern end of the stone wall, there is another inscription titled “Record of the Ancient Spring,” which measures 85 cm in width and 87 cm in height, containing 13 lines with 13 characters per line, each character approximately 4×6 cm, written in regular script. The text describes how the ancient stone spring “was long buried and silted up by dirt and mud, causing inconvenience to travelers who needed water. Upon seeing this, I gathered people and hired stonemasons to reopen the bottom of the spring.” The date inscribed reads “The tenth month of early summer, in the year of Mao-Yin (1098) during the Shaosheng era of the Great Song Dynasty.” The “Distance Marker Stone” was discovered for the first time in Lianyungang City, and holds significant historical value for studying transportation and trade activities during the Tang and Song dynasties in the region. In 2010, it was announced as part of the fourth batch of municipal cultural relics protection units in Lianyungang. In 2011, it was listed as part of the seventh batch of provincial cultural relics protection units in Jiangsu Province.

Centered around the engraved cliff face, extending 30 meters outward to the east, west, and north, and 50 meters southward from the top of the cliff.
