Chen Diaoyuan’s Villa

Chen Diaoyuan’s Villa is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

Chen Diaoyuan’s Villa is located on Beigu Mountain in Xugou Subdistrict, Lianyungang District, Lianyungang City. Chen Diaoyuan (1886–1943), courtesy name Xuexuan, was a military division commander during the Republic of China era and served as governor of both Anhui and Shandong provinces, as well as a lieutenant general and president of the Military Advisory Council under the Nationalist government. The villa was funded and built in 1926 by ——, and later gifted to Chen Diaoyuan, hence its name. It is also known as “Sea-Viewing Villa” (Wanghai Lou) because of the sea view visible from its windows. Designed by a German engineer, it is a classical Sino-European-style villa. Covering an area of approximately 363 square meters (including the basement), the structure is entirely built of stone. It features a parking area in front, as well as auxiliary buildings such as a stone-paved driveway and a stone gate. The villa remains well preserved today and is currently used as a guesthouse by a military garrison. It holds certain reference value for the study of historical figures from the Republic of China period and modern architectural art. In 2001, it was designated as part of the third batch of cultural relic protection units in Lianyungang City. In 2011, it was listed as part of the seventh batch of cultural relic protection units in Jiangsu Province.

East to the square in front of the villa, west to the second-floor sloped-roof building, south to the road and surrounding wall, north to the 5-meter-high dam platform.
